Fundamentals of Aids to Navigation in the Maritime Sector
Introduction
Marine Aids to Navigation are developed and harmonised through international cooperation and the provision of standards. These systems form the backbone of global maritime safety, ensuring that vessels can navigate safely and efficiently across oceans, ports, and inland waterways.
From traditional lighthouses and buoys to modern electronic positioning systems, Marine Aids to Navigation (AtoN) play a crucial role in preventing maritime accidents, protecting the marine environment, and supporting the global economy by facilitating safe trade routes. Their design, implementation, and maintenance require close coordination between national authorities, international organisations, and private service providers, all working within an agreed framework of technical and operational standards.
